And of course there are all sorts of nice Vance tidbits, from the culture of the Emblem Men where the person is merely the spiritual vehicle for the medallions they wearto the sandblast guns firing particulates at relativistic speedsto the ways that the a The fun of the book is that Reith is adaptable, moral, and willing to become entangled in local problems, all of which is a recipe for adventure in the Vance mode.

And Jack Vance did think up a great world here. When someone sent distress signals to outer space from the planet Tschai, it was Adam Reith’s misfortune to be sent from Earth to investigate. They walked directly below the barrack car; Reith saw them close at hand and was reminded of large silverfish grotesquely endowed with semi-human legs and arms.

Putting adversaries to death is done rather cavalierly. Just a bit of shelf wear. Yes, the Brother Initiate was great too. And to find the mystery of the distress call and the vicious attack, he would have first to gain his freedom and then find a safe way to pass the city and the alien Chasch and chssch treacherous cousins, the Blue Chasch. He really brings Jack Vance’s characters to life. Each involves an intelligent, scientifically advanced species.

View all 4 comments. Very little character development, abysmal portrayals of women well, one woman, there is only really 1 female character. It appears to still be in print in paperback along with the other three chqsch under the title Planet of Adventure by Orb books.

Reith meets most alien life by either lopping off a limb with a sword he picked up, shooting them full of holes with his ‘needler,’ or vaporizing them with the seemingly limitless power chasvh from his emergency pack. Just look at it! Not a fan of planetary romance. Campy pulp fiction relying heavily on tropes of the genre. Because when his ship came close to Tschai, it was torpedoed-and Adam escaped to the surface with his life and nothing else.
